History

The goodness aroma of Ayurveda was ever-present in the land of Mezhathur. “Chatharu padi” (the entrance to Chatharu Nair’s residence) has always remained open to ailing children since the beginning of 19th century. He learned the basics of Ayurveda Balachikitsa from his father Vaidya Sri. Manghat Raman Nair (his father and fore-fathers were also vaidyas) along with his siblings Madhavan Nair and Kittunni Nair. But, the lineage of this tradition was through Vaidya Sri.Chatharu Nair.

He emphasized on paediatrics especially treatment for Asthma, Sprue, Dermatitis, Polio, Jaundice, Primary complex etc. with a precise goal in mind, “A healthy new generation”. Prescriptions were written on “Thaliyola” ( a writing instrument prevalent in ancient south India), and it was common practice for the people to collect raw materials(drugs) from surroundings for preparing medicines as prescribed. Vasapatradi Kashaya, Moor Kashaya, Shadtanduladi Kashaya, Valiya-Aranyadi Velichenna etc. were the traditional medicines developed by him for the sake of children. There was a traditional belief among the people at the time, “Daivam pathi, Chatharu nair pathi” which translates to God and Chatharu Nair contribute equally on the path to healing.

Later, in 1951, his nephew Vaidya M.Gangadharan Nair (s/o Sri.Kanjur Narayanan Nair) was chosen to inherit the tradition of Ayurveda balachikitsa, as of Guru Kula sampradaya.“Arogya kalpadrumam” was the first text he referred to learn the basics of balachikitsa. Sanskrit, Sidharoopam, Bala-prabodhanam, Sriramobhandam, Krishnavilasam, Raghuvamsam, Ashtanga hrudayam etc. were also taught along with Ayurveda. After 1 year of strict guidance under his guru, Vaidya Gangadharan Nair’s debut in Ayurveda balachikitsa was at the age of 15, and since then, he successfully treated many cases. It took eleven years of determination to transform him into a complete scholar of Ayurveda balachikitsa. In 1962, Chatharu Nair solemnized the marriage of his disciple and nephew Gangadharan Nair with his great grand-daughter K.P.Vijayalakshmi. Vaidya Sri.Chatharu Nair left for his heavenly abode at the age of 93, in 1967., leaving behind a rich legacy of extra ordinary heritage to his disciple.

Under the virtuous expertise of Vaidya Gangadharan Nair, CNS achieved its pinnacle. He perceived traditional medicinal preparations from his guru and started manufacturing quality assured medicines at home under the supervision of his spouse and mother-in-law without seeking profit. He started off with Dhanwantaram gulika, few Arishtas, Asavas and later on into other classical preparations. In the memory of his late guru, Vaidya Gangadharan Nair established “Chatharu Nair Smaraka (CNS) Chikitsalayam” on 2nd October 1987, which focussed solely in providing high quality Ayurveda medicines to the patients. The first branch of CNS Chikitsalayam was inaugurated at Edappal in Malappuram District by Sri.K.T.M.Nambiar who is a close associate of Gangadharan Nair. Later on, an Ayurveda paediatric hospital commenced operations on 26th September 2003 initially with a capacity of 12 beds. Another hospital has also been functional in the name “Arogyasadhana” since 2012. Moreover, many branches has since been established across the state.

The above is just trivia and words fall short to pen down the tales of our prestigious institution. At present, this tradition is carried forward through descendants of Vaidya M.Gangadharan Nair and (Late) Srimathi K.P.Vijayalakshmi, daughter Dr.K.P.Yesodamani and son Dr.K.P.Manikandan and son-in-law Dr.T.Sreenivasan and grand-children at CNS Institutes.
